VICARS VOICE

Dear Members and Friends of St. Luke's:

In 2008 St. Luke's will be 175 years old. After one year as Vicar, I learned the important place St. Luke's had in Beacon in the past and understand its important place in the future. We are blessed with a beautiful Church, fine facilities and lovely property. Our responsibility is to maintain them well so that ways of our Lord can be expressed by the people who use them. The more people involved, the more ministry we can accomplish.

On Sunday, September 9th, two themes are at the heart of our services. One is Homecoming. St. Luke's, as in many churches for one reason or another, members have fallen away. On this Homecoming Sunday we welcome your return. Seek a renewal of the church relationship, a renewal of your relationship to our Lord and God and make His work vital in the parish and community once again.

The second theme is Rally Day. We rally our forces to help make our ministries effective. We need ushers, lay readers, acolytes, altar guild, Sunday school teachers, and craftsmen. Let me know what you would like to do. I'll find a place for you.

There are four areas we need to organize in a hurry. First, we need a group to plan the activities to honor and celebrate our 175th anniversary. Second, we need volunteers for our Pastoral Care Team. This ministry includes visiting shut-ins, driving people to appointments, even to church, feeding the hungry. The list for helping those in need goes on and on. Third, we need choir members and musicians. A big asset for Sunday worship is music. We have fine organists in Janet Nickerson and Adam Yaun, and a few loyal and dedicated singers. We need more. Rehearsals are on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. Christian education through music is a great way to learn. Fourth, I want to create a worship committee. Here we intentionally discuss our Sunday services and special services we feel necessary to enhance our worshipping experience for the St. Luke's congregation.

Please think and pray seriously over the opportunities to participate in serving the church. Don't leave it for others. Try something for yourself, it will benefit everybody.

Finally, on Sunday, December 23, 2007, the Rt. Rev. Mark Sisk, the Bishop of the Diocese of New York will visit St. Luke's. I would like to present a confirmation class. Any young person who has not been confirmed and is at least in the sixth grade meet with me beginning Saturday, September 22 at 9:00 a.m. Adults who wish to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church speak to me personally, and we will arrange period of instructions.

Please call me if you have any questions or concerns (831- 2643 or 351-4639).

God's blessings be with you and our ministries at St. Luke's.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Dr. Edwin H. Cromey
Vicar

P.S. This year we celebrate St. Francis Day, on Sunday October 7, at 10:00 a.m. We pray in thanksgiving for creation, nature and we bless our pets and animals. It's a day to enjoy and appreciate.

That's Right! We're going to enter a float into this years parade. We're going to be presenting an interpretation of the Ark built by Noah. We say interpretation only because we're not quite sure how or with what materials we will end up constructing our ark. If ANYONE has ideas or suggestions, we'd love the input. So far, we've tossed around a foam or paper ark on top of a trailer or flat bed. Smaller boat(s) on hand drawn carriages, and the like.
Remembering Ava Marie (Van Slyke) Stureski - September 15, 2005 to April 5, 2006

Unfortunately, Ava was an innocent victim of SIDS, sudden infant death syndrome. Ava was the daughter of Michael & Karen Van Slyke Stureski. She was a triplet sister to Brady and Carly, and loved by many other family and friends who were touched by her life. Many people who did not even know this family came out to help them with the unexpected costs of Ava’s passing last year. The event was such a success that they are very proud to be planning it again!

They are now be affiliated with 1st Candle /SIDS Alliance, a not for profit organization who helps with everything from SIDS research to helping families cope with a loss. It is recognized as one of the top fifteen children’s charities in America. (firstcandle.org) They have worked with them to set up a memorial fund in Ava Marie’s name. All donations are tax exempt and will be used towards SIDS research. SIDS claims the lives of over 2,500 children every year! We are hoping to do all we can to help fight SIDS, while remembering sweet Ava along the way.

Any help that you would be willing to offer will be greatly appreciated! They had such great success with the raffles last year and are hoping to expand it. They will gladly accept whatever you are willing to offer, gift certificates, gift baskets, etc. Every little bit counts! For a donation of $100 or more, you can sponsor a golf hole, which will display a sign with your business name on it.

For more info, visit their website.

Dear St. Luke’s:

Tomorrow (April 1st) is Palm Sunday. I look forward to seeing you on this Holy Day. At 8:00 a.m. we will read the dramatic Passion Story from St. Luke. Then, at 10:00 a.m. we will present the beautiful tableaux of the Stations of the Cross. This was written especially for me by Madeline Morrissey sixteen years ago. I am most pleased to bring it into your experience.

As Holy Week continues, on Wednesday our bible study at 10:00 a.m. we examine a crucifixion scene. At 7:00 p.m., Maundy Thursday, we will discuss the meaning of the bread and wine in Holy Communion and then prepare the church for Good Friday.

Eight Beacon clergy will be our guests on Good Friday from noon to three. Each sermon will reflect on our Lord’s last moments on the Cross before he died. Since we are the host parish for the community, it is important we are present for some or all of this moving service. It will make our Easter celebrations (8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.) that much glorious.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Dr. Edwin H. Cromey

THE VICARS VOICE

Dear St. Luke's:

Palm Sunday, April first, begins Holy Week. As Christians this week is extremely important for us. During these days we identify with Jesus' journey to the cross for the sake of our salvation. St. Luke's will offer several occasions for you to make this time meaningful.

On Palm Sunday, the Passion Story According to St. Luke, will be read at 8:00 a.m. At 10:00 a.m., The Stations of the Cross will be presented in tableaux form in place of the gospel reading. This is a stunning powerful dramatization. I know you will be moved by it. A literary friend wrote it for me fifteen years ago. She saw the first production and has since passed away. I am always proud to present her creation now especially at St. Luke's.

On Wednesday, April 4th, at 12:10 p.m., our Bible Study will look at a crucifixion scene and discuss it from different points of view.

On Maundy Thursday, April 5th, I invite you to a special service in the church. We will examine the meanings of the last supper. Then we will perform the stripping of the alter which prepares the church for the next day.

From noon to 3:00 p.m. on Good Friday, we continue a Beacon tradition at St. Luke's: The Preaching of the Seven Last Words. I will host the service. Eight beacon Clergy will preach an introduction and Jesus' seven utterances as he died:

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Today, thou shalt be with me in paradise.

Woman, behold thy son... Son, behold thy mother.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

I Thirst.

It is finished.

Father, into thy hands I command my Spirit.

One is not bound to stay for the three hours. try to spend as much time as possible.

The Glory of Easter, April 8th, speaks for itself. let us share that glory together at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Dr. Edwin H. Cromey
